Frequently asked questions
Not a real card. Fictional practice card — NOT the official NMJL card. Its hands are made up for learning. To play real games, buy the current NMJL card from the League and study it. Real hands, sections and points will be different.
Accounts
Do I need an account?
No. Anyone can use the lessons, drills and practice games as a guest. An account saves your progress across devices and lets you play online with friends.
Who can make an account?
Adults 18 and older. Younger players are welcome to learn as guests.
What happens to my guest progress when I sign up?
It's kept on your device until you sign in, then added to your account automatically.
The card and the League
Is this the official NMJL card?
No. The app uses the Construct Practice Card, a made-up training card. The official card belongs to the National Mah Jongg League and comes out each year.
Are you part of the National Mah Jongg League?
No. I know Mah Jongg is an independent learning app and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the NMJL.
Where do I get the real card?
Buy it directly from the National Mah Jongg League at nationalmahjonggleague.org.
How do I know what's a League rule and what's just advice?
Every lesson and tip carries a tag: Official Rule, Card-Year Specific, Strategy Tip, Etiquette or House Rule.
Playing
How does playing with a friend online work?
Sign in, open a table and share the code or invite link. Your friend sits across from you, and two computer players fill the other seats.
Can I play online with strangers or the real NMJL card?
Not right now. Online tables are private practice with one friend you invite, using our made-up Construct Practice Card. There are no public tables, and official card hands are never shown.
Why is there no Charleston in online games?
Online games skip it for now to keep hands quick. At a real table, the League requires the Charleston.
What if the host closes the page?
The host's screen runs the computer players, so the game pauses until the host comes back.
Finding a table
Which areas does the directory cover?
Only the places listed — currently around NYC, Long Island, Westchester and North Jersey.
Can I suggest a table?
Yes. Suggestions are reviewed by an admin before they appear for everyone.
